Arlington Court, National Trust in Devon
Set in the thickly wooded valley of the River Yeo. 1400-ha (3500-acre) Arlington Court estate with a 1822 house, built in the neo-classical style. Perhaps the outside of the building is a little plain, but inside are a number of collections brought together by Miss Rosalie Chichester who owned the estate. These include shells, costumes, model ships, pewter. In addition the National Trust displays their carriage collection in the stables of Arlington Court.
In the basement is Devon’s largest colony of Lesser Horseshoe bats. Arlington’s stable block showcases one of the best collections of 19th-century horse-drawn vehicles in the country and offers carriage rides around the grounds.
You can enjoy walks through the grounds, with both gardens and parkland walks available. The woodland paths are open all winter. The parkland is grazed by Jacob sheep and Shetland ponies.
